Derby Pie is a popular dessert that combines the rich flavors of chocolate, nuts, and a flaky pie crust. I can't wait for you to try this mouthwatering delicacy that is sure to leave you craving for more.

This pie originated in Kentucky, USA, and has become synonymous with the Kentucky Derby, the legendary horse racing event. It was first created in the 1950s by the Kern family, owners of the Melrose Inn in Prospect, Kentucky. Originally called "Walnut Pie," it was later trademarked as "Derby Pie" due to its association with the Kentucky Derby.

    Derby Pie

The filling of Derby Pie is made by combining ingredients such as sugar, butter, flour, eggs, and vanilla extract. These ingredients are mixed together before adding the chocolate chips and chopped nuts. The filling is then poured into an unbaked pie shell and baked until set and golden brown.

Derby Pie has gained widespread popularity due to its irresistible combination of flavors and textures. The sweetness of the chocolate chips pairs perfectly with the crunchy texture of the nuts, while the buttery crust provides a delightful base. It is often served at Derby-related events and celebrations, but its deliciousness has made it a favorite dessert year-round.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of nuts instead of walnuts?

While the traditional recipe calls for walnuts, you can substitute them with pecans for a different flavor profile. Pecans provide a slightly sweeter, richer taste that complements the chocolate perfectly.

How long should I wait before slicing my pie?

Allow your pie to cool completely before slicing into it to prevent it from falling apart.

What should I serve with Derby Pie?

Derby Pie is delicious on its own, but you can enhance the experience by serving it with a dollop of whipped cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce for added indulgence.

    Ingredients

    • ¼ cup butter unsalted
    • 1 cup sugar granulated
    • ½ cup flour all-purpose
    • 2 eggs large
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
    • 1 cup chopped walnuts
    • 1 pie shell 9 inch, unbaked

    Instructions

    • Gather all your ingredients. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • In a microwave-safe bowl, place the ¼ cup of unsalted butter. Heat the butter in the microwave until fully melted.
    • Once the butter is melted, add the granulated sugar and all-purpose flour to the bowl. Whisk the mixture together until it becomes a smooth paste.
    • Next, break two large eggs into the bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. Whisk these ingredients into the mixture until they're fully incorporated and the mixture becomes smooth again.
    • Pour 1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips into the bowl, followed by 1 cup of chopped walnuts. Stir these in gently with a spatula or spoon until they're evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
    • Now, take your unbaked 9-inch pie shell and pour the mixture into it. Make sure to spread it evenly in the pie shell.
    • Place the pie in your preheated oven and bake for approximately 40-45 minutes. Keep an eye on the pie, you'll know it's done when the middle is set and the top has a beautiful golden brown color.
    • Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will allow the filling to set properly and make it easier to slice.

    Notes

    • While the traditional recipe calls for walnuts, you can substitute them with pecans for a different flavor profile. Pecans provide a slightly sweeter, richer taste that complements the chocolate perfectly.
    • Allow your pie to cool completely before slicing into it to prevent it from falling apart.
    • This pie pairs well with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. Enjoy!
