One of my favorite appetizers and a major crowd-pleaser is Classic Layered Bean Dip. This dip is perfect for feeding groups and for game day get-togethers or awards show watch parties, barbecues, or other casual gatherings that are finger food friendly.

This is a recipe that my mom has been taking to parties since I was a kid and I’ve been doing the same things for years and years. I love getting the kids involved with making this because it’s such an easy and fun recipe for them to construct. You simply layer the first three ingredients and sprinkle the rest on top, and you have an impressive and filling dip!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It’s no-bake, comes together in minutes, and everyone LOVES it.
  • This is a kid-friendly recipe that they can make themselves, maybe with the help of cutting tomatoes and shredding cheese.
  • A versatile finger food that is perfect for parties and crowds—just double or triple the ingredients depending on the number of people being served.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Refried beans – use store-bought beans or plan ahead and make your own refried beans in the slow cooker
  • Taco seasoning – store-bought or homemade taco seasoning
  • Sour cream
  • Cheese – our favorites are cheddar and Colby Jack for this dip
  • Roma tomatoes – other chopped tomatoes can be used, but you may need to drain off some of the liquid so it doesn’t make the dip too watery
  • Black olives
  • Green onions – other onions, diced small, can be substituted for green onions
  • Taco sauce or salsa – use your favorite taco-style sauce or salsa
  • Tortilla chips – grab a few big bags of chips to have on hand or make your own with tortillas

How to Make Classic Layered Bean Dip

  1. Combine refried beans and taco seasoning and spread on the bottom of the serving dish.
  2. Add sour cream and then shredded cheese.
  3. Then layer on olives, onions, and tomatoes.
  4. Finish with any additional toppings. Taco sauce or salsa can be drizzled over the top or served alongside the dip.

Recipe FAQs

Do refried beans need to be cooked?

Refried beans are a blessing in a can. They’re already cooked and ready to eat, which makes this dip even easier to throw together. All you need to do is mix the beans with some taco seasoning and start layering in a serving dish.

Can Bean Dip be frozen?

Freezing this bean dip will affect the texture of the various ingredients, so I do not recommend freezing it. If you do end up wanting to keep it longer, mix it together so all the ingredients are well combined, and freeze it that way to make a burrito filling, rather than the multiple-layer dip. It can freeze in that form for 3 to 4 months.

How long does Bean Dip last?

The flavors and textures of Bean Dip taste their best within the first 24 hours of making it. Keep it covered in the fridge until you are ready to serve it.

Expert Tips

  • Take any leftovers you might have, and spoon them into a flour tortilla the next day for homemade burritos!
  • Serve this savory dip with tortilla chips, crackers, or chopped veggies (cucumbers and bell pepper slices go great with it).
  • I highly recommend buying a block of cheese and shredding it yourself. It always tastes so much better than pre-shredded cheese!

Notes

  • This recipe can be made up to 24 hours in advance and kept covered in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
  • Sometimes, I can find jalapeno refried beans, and I love using them for a little more flavor and heat.
  • Feel free to add chopped pickled jalapeno to the top, or drizzle with additional hot sauce if you’d like.
  • If I ever have leftovers, I’ll mix it all together in a bowl and turn it into the filling for burritos another day.

I HAVE A SILLY ? DO YOU MIX THE SEASON POWDER WITH NO WATER IN THE BEANS?? I KNOW IT’S STILL SORRY!!!

    1. Melissa says:

Just throw it in dry 🙂 Great question though! If the beans are too thick to spread I’d thin them with a bit of salsa!
