Horseradish Sauce

You can use this homemade creamy horseradish sauce to add a spicy zing to almost any savory dish! It’s most commonly served on top of beef, but you can pair it with a wide variety of dishes! Below are a few ideas to get you started.

  • Horseradish sauce pairs wonderfully with fish! Try using your sauce as a garnish for cod or salmon fillets or serve it alongside fish sticks or some beer battered fish as a spicy alternative to tartar sauce.
  • Try switching up your sandwich game by spreading a bit of horseradish sauce on your bread instead of mustard or mayo.
  • Out of wasabi? In a pinch, you can use a little bit of creamed horseradish to add bite to your favorite sushi.
  • Add a spicy zing to your favorite soups and salads by using this creamy horseradish sauce as a dressing or topper.
  • Anywhere you would normally add sour cream, you can use this homemade horseradish sauce instead. Use it to give enchiladas, baked potatoes, and chili a bit of extra heat!

Ingredient Notes

  • Prepared Horseradish—A jarred mixture of grated horseradish, vinegar, and salt.
  • Mayonnaise—Adds creaminess and helps to cut through the spice of the horseradish.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar—Gives your horseradish sauce just a hint of sweetness.
  • Salt and Pepper

Recipe Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the sour cream, horseradish, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between prepared horseradish and cream style horseradish?

Prepared horseradish is a simple mixture of grated horseradish, vinegar, and salt. To make cream style horseradish sauce, you combine prepared horseradish with mayo, sour cream, or both to create a luscious sauce that is tangier and less spicy.

Why do you put vinegar in horseradish?

Vinegar is commonly added to grated horseradish to help stabilize its flavor. Horseradish has almost no odor or flavor until its grated. The longer the horseradish sits after being grated, the spicier and more potent it becomes. Adding vinegar keeps the horseradish at a more stable heat level.

Is horseradish good or bad for you?

Horseradish is full of antioxidants which promote healthy cells. However, horseradish has a powerful, spicy flavor that can irritate already inflamed areas of the gut, so I recommend enjoying it sparingly!

How to Store Leftover Creamy Horseradish Sauce

I recommend storing any leftover horseradish sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. You might notice that the sauce will separate a bit over time; this is normal and nothing to worry about! Simply give your sauce a good stir before serving it on top of beef, eggs, salads, potatoes, soups, sandwiches, or fish.

Expert Tips and Tricks

  • The longer you let your mixed horseradish sauce sit in the fridge, the better it will taste! So, make sure you give the flavors ample time to develop before serving this sauce.
  • It is possible to make this sauce with freshly grated horseradish instead of prepared horseradish. Just keep in mind that fresh horseradish will be spicier than the jarred version, so use less than the recipe calls for.
  • Don’t have apple cider vinegar on hand? You can use distilled white vinegar and a small pinch of sugar instead.
  • If you’re having a hard time finding prepared horseradish at the grocery store, look in the refrigerated section near the sour cream and cottage cheese. It also may be stored in the produce section or near the bottled condiments.
