  • Chicken Thighs—I prefer the ease of boneless chicken thighs, but you can also use bone-in thighs.
  • Stone Ground Mustard—Gives your chicken a tangy and peppery flavor.
  • Honey—Adds just the right amount of sweetness to this dish.
  • Spices—A homemade blend of fresh thyme, fresh rosemary, garlic powder, and salt.

How to Make Honey Mustard Chicken Thighs

Frequently Asked Questions

What flavors pair well with honey mustard?

The juicy and salty heartiness of chicken thighs pair well with the sweet tang of the homemade honey mustard sauce. This dish also pairs well with creamy, rich cheeses. Try topping your finished baked chicken with a slice of cheddar or brie and broil the dish until the cheese is melty and bubbly.

Why do people coat chicken in mustard?

Aside from the fact that it’s delicious, the mustard in this dish will actually tenderize your chicken! The acidity of the mustard helps to break down the meat, making it juicy and flavorful.

Why do chicken thighs taste better than breast?

Chicken thighs are a dark meat, meaning that they are fattier than a white meat cut like chicken breast. Because of this, chicken thighs almost always have a richer, juicier flavor!

What Goes Well with Baked Honey Mustard Chicken?

My sweet and tangy honey mustard chicken thighs pair well with tons of different sides. I like to keep things classic and comforting by pairing this chicken with roasted potatoes, homemade focaccia, and lemon pepper asparagus. You can also serve this hearty dish with a spinach salad, butter and parmesan noodles, or sweet potato fries. Don’t forget to jazz up this entrée by garnishing the chicken thighs with some extra rosemary, thyme, or a drizzle of your homemade honey mustard sauce.

How to Store Honey Mustard Chicken

If you have any leftover honey mustard chicken, you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge. When stored properly, this chicken should stay fresh for up to 5 days. This dish is best reheated in a 375°F air fryer for 3-4 minutes or until warmed through. Alternatively, you can reheat your baked chicken in the microwave for about 45 seconds. I recommend adding some extra sauce to keep the leftover chicken from drying out.

Recipe Variations

Not a fan of stone ground mustard? You can use your favorite kind of mustard in this dish. Dijon, spicy brown, or even regular old yellow mustard will work!

When you omit the chicken, this is simply a recipe for a really yummy homemade honey mustard sauce. You can use this sauce to glaze other meats, as a marinade, or even as a dipping sauce for fries or chicken strips.

Use this cooking method to make different flavors of baked chicken thighs! Simply swap out the honey mustard for your sauce of choice. Barbecue, buffalo, and parmesan garlic are some of my other favorite sauces to bake onto chicken.

Expert Tips and Tricks

  • You can prepare this meal up to 24 hours in advance! Once you’ve brushed the sauce over the chicken, cover the baking dish with a layer or two of plastic wrap and let it marinate in the fridge until you’re ready to bake it.
  • If you don’t have fresh thyme or rosemary on hand, you can always use the dried versions or an Italian seasoning blend instead.
  • You’ll know this honey mustard chicken is done cooking when a thermometer inserted into the center of the thickest thigh reads 165°F.

Honey Mustard Chicken

This Honey Mustard Chicken is one of my favorite dishes to serve to a crowd. Sweet, tangy, juicy, and savory, this one-dish meal is hearty and makes enough to serve eight!
Prep: 15 minutes
Cook: 1 hour
Total: 1 hour 15 minutes
Servings: 8

  • 8 chicken thighs
  • ½ cup stone ground mustard
  • ½ cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, (or 1/4 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, (or 1/4 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Place the chicken thighs in a 9×13 inch glass baking dish and set aside.
  • In a medium sized bowl, whisk together the mustard, honey, salt, thyme, rosemary, and garlic powder until homogenous.
  • Use a pastry brush or spoon to coat the chicken thighs in the sauce.
  • Cook the chicken thighs in the oven for an hour, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
  • Serve and enjoy!

  • This chicken can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days in an airtight container.
  • You can prep this chicken up to 24 hours ahead and let it marinate before cooking.
  • If you do not have stone ground mustard, you can also use dijon mustard.
  • I prefer using fresh herbs, but you can also use dried thyme and rosemary. This chicken is great topped with a few fresh sprigs of thyme.
  • You can use either boneless thighs or bone-in thighs. The boneless thigh take less time to cook generally so check them at around the 45 minute mark.
