Fried Wontons are crunchy, savory and a favorite menu item at Chinese restaurants. Did you know that they are super easy to make at home?! Seriously, this recipe is delicious and is a fun addition to any occasion.
Cream cheese wontons make the perfect appetizer. They are semi-homemade so they are quick to whip up when you are in a hurry. They would be so fun at a baby shower, party, or game night.
Homemade Fried Wontons
If you haven’t tried fried wontons- you are missing out! Fried wontons are made with a ground meat like pork, chicken or shrimp. Along with the meat, they are filled with cream cheese, chopped green onions and seasonings. All of these ingredients are placed in a thin sheet of dough and then wrapped to create cute wontons that will delight your tastebuds.
These crispy, bite-sized wontons make a great appetizer for a party, baby shower, or game nights. You can deep fry them or if you want to make them a bit lighter-toss ‘em in the air fryer. Both options yield yummy results.
Fried wontons are really easy and dare I say fun to make. First, you will mix together all of the ingredients. Once they are thoroughly combined, drop 1-2 teaspoons of that mixture onto the center of the wonton wrapper and fold.
There are several different ways to fold wonton wrappers. Simple folding instructions can usually be found on the packaging. I recommend folding wontons on a flat surface to make the process smoother. With the mixture in the center of the square wrapper, fold in half to create a triangle and seal the edges together. The point of the triangle should be facing away from you. Next, dab a drop of water onto one of the corners. Then, simply fold the 2 side points of the triangle down and seal together forming a diamond shape.
Try and get all of the air bubbles out when sealing or your wonton might pop open during the frying process. There are other ways to fold wontons, ranging from just a basic triangle to getting really fancy with your design. It’s up to you-the end product will taste fabulous any way you fold it.
Can I make wontons ahead of time?
Yes! If you run out of time or you are just trying to get ahead of the curve, once the wontons are folded you can place them in the refrigerator for a few hours or up to a day. Store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
Where can I find wonton wrappers?
You should be able to find wonton wrappers in most grocery stores in the produce section. I have found them near the tofu and egg roll wrap area. You can also hit up your local Asian market to find wonton wrappers.
What do you serve fried wontons with?
I usually serve them as an appetizer and add a dipping sauce with them. You can make your own or just use store-bought sweet chili sauce as a dip.
What is the best oil to use for frying?
There are many oils out there to choose from but for frying you want an oil that has a neutral flavor and has a high smoke point. You want to be able to cook at higher temperatures without sacrificing any flavor. Vegetable or canola oil is a great all-purpose oil that works great for frying. Peanut oil would also work.
Are wonton wrappers and egg roll wrappers the same?
Wonton wrappers and egg roll wrappers are made from the same ingredients but wonton wrappers are smaller in size compared to egg roll wrappers.
Can you freeze homemade fried wontons?
You can totally freeze fried wontons. In order to freeze them, place on a parchment lined baking sheet making sure none of the wontons are touching. Place plastic wrap over the top and freeze for a few hours until completely frozen. Once they are frozen, remove them from the baking sheet and place them in an airtight container. When you are ready to use the frozen wontons, simply thaw and fry as directed.

Homemade Wontons are made from store bought wonton wrappers, filled with everyday ingredients, and fried to perfection. They're easier than you think!
- 2 quarts of oil for frying (such as canola, vegetable, or corn oil)
- 1 package cream cheese (8 ounces), at room temperature
- 2 tablespoons of sriracha hot sauce
- 1-2 tablespoon finely chopped green onions
- Wonton wrappers ( if unable to find wonton wrappers you can use egg roll wrappers cut into fourths)
- 1 egg, beaten
- In a large Dutch oven or a heavy-bottomed and high-sided skillet, add the oil and heat over medium to medium-high heat. Use a paddle thermometer to gauge the temperature.
- While the oil is heating, mix the cream cheese, sriracha, and green onions together in a medium mixing bow.
- Place 1 ½ tablespoons of mixture in middle of a wonton wrapper.
- Brush 2 edges of the wrapper with beaten eggs and fold over bringing 2 opposite corners together to seal in filling (You are making a triangle when you fold it).
- Bring the 2 other corners together to form what looks like a little envelope.
- Repeat with remaining filling and wonton wrappers.
- When the oil is heated to 375 degrees F you are ready to fry.
- Working in batches, fry 6 or so wontons at a time, as to not over crowd the pan.
- Use a spider strainer to remove the wontons from the oil and place them on a paper towel lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining wontons, working in batches.
- Eat the wontons right away while still hot.
- These are great dipped in sweet and sour sauce or sweet chili sauce.
