Fried wontons are filled with cream cheese, chopped green onions, and seasonings. All of these ingredients are placed in a thin sheet of dough and then wrapped to create cute wontons that will delight your taste buds.

Cream cheese wontons make the perfect appetizer. They are semi-homemade, so they are quick to whip up when you are in a hurry. They would be fun at a baby shower, party, or game night, or serve them as a side with fake-out takeout vegetable lo mein!

How to Make Fried Wontons

  1. Mix together cream cheese, sriracha, and green onions.
  2. Place a bit of mixture into wonton wrapper and roll up, using the egg wash to seal edges.
  3. Fry in batches in hot oil or cook in the air fryer.

How to Fold Wonton Wrappers

There are several different ways to fold wonton wrappers. Simple folding instructions can usually be found on the packaging.

I recommend folding wontons on a flat surface to make the process smoother. With the mixture in the center of the square wrapper, fold in half to create a triangle and seal the edges together. The point of the triangle should be facing away from you.

Next, dab a drop of water onto one of the corners. Then, simply fold the 2 side points of the triangle down and seal together forming a diamond shape.

Pro tip: Try and get all of the air bubbles out when sealing or your wonton might pop open during the frying process.

Recipe FAQs

Where can I find wonton wrappers?

You should be able to find wonton wrappers in most grocery stores in the produce section. I have found them near the tofu and egg roll wraps. You can also hit up your local Asian market to find wonton wrappers.

Are wonton wrappers and egg roll wrappers the same?

Wonton wrappers and egg roll wrappers are made from the same ingredients, but wonton wrappers are smaller in size compared to egg roll wrappers.

What is the best oil to use for frying?

The best oils for frying have a neutral flavor and a high smoke point. You want to be able to cook at higher temperatures without sacrificing any flavor. Vegetable or canola oil are great all-purpose oils that works well for frying. Peanut oil will also work.

Expert Tips

  • Pick the right oil, such as vegetable or canola oil. These have a neutral taste and a high smoke point, perfect for frying.
  • If you can only find egg roll wrappers, cut them in fourths to use in place of wonton wrappers.
  • It’s important to fry the wontons in batches, so they have plenty of room to fry all around the edges.

What to Serve With Fried Wontons

I usually serve them as an appetizer and add a dipping sauce with them. You can make your own or just use store-bought sweet chili sauce as a dip.

Another favorite of our family is to serve these cream cheese wontons with Chinese- or Asian-inspired meals like these:

And, of course, don’t leave out the homemade egg rolls!

How to Make Wontons Ahead

Once the wontons are folded, they can be kept in the refrigerator for a few hours or up to a day. Store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh.

Wontons can also be frozen once they’re wrapped and before frying. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, making sure none of the wontons are touching. Place plastic wrap over the top and freeze for a few hours until completely frozen. Once frozen, remove from the baking sheet and place in an airtight container.

When you are ready to use the frozen wontons, simply thaw and fry as directed

Fried Wonton Recipe

Homemade Wontons are made from store bought wonton wrappers, filled with everyday ingredients, and fried to perfection. They’re easier than you think!
Prep: 20 minutes
Cook: 15 minutes
Total: 35 minutes
Servings: 12

Ingredients

  • 2 quarts of oil for frying, (such as canola, vegetable, or corn oil)
  • 1 package cream cheese, (8 ounces), at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons of sriracha hot sauce
  • 1-2 tablespoon finely chopped green onions
  • Wonton wrappers, (if unable to find wonton wrappers you can use egg roll wrappers cut into fourths)
  • 1 egg,, beaten

Instructions

  • In a large Dutch oven or a heavy-bottomed and high-sided skillet, add the oil and heat over medium to medium-high heat. Use a paddle thermometer to gauge the temperature.
  • While the oil is heating, mix the cream cheese, sriracha, and green onions together in a medium mixing bow.
  • Place 1 ½ tablespoons of mixture in middle of a wonton wrapper.
  • Brush 2 edges of the wrapper with beaten eggs and fold over bringing 2 opposite corners together to seal in filling (You are making a triangle when you fold it).
  • Bring the 2 other corners together to form what looks like a little envelope.
  • Repeat with remaining filling and wonton wrappers.
  • When the oil is heated to 375 degrees F you are ready to fry.
  • Working in batches, fry 6 or so wontons at a time, as to not over crowd the pan.
  • Use a spider strainer to remove the wontons from the oil and place them on a paper towel lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining wontons, working in batches.
  • Eat the wontons right away while still hot.

Notes

  • These are great dipped in sweet and sour sauce or sweet chili sauce.
  • Wontons can be made ahead and refrigerated or frozen to be fried later.
  • Frying the wontons in batches without overcrowding will ensure they are crunchy on the outside and just right on the inside.
  • Wontons can be cooked in the air fryer instead of being fried. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended cooking temperature and time. It will likely take about 10 minutes to cook.
