What’s your definition of “healthy?” I believe homemade foods are always better for my family than processed foods. While this homemade chocolate waffle recipe does contain sugar and chocolate, I’m comfortable with those ingredients since I know what they are. If you enjoy a couple of chocolate waffles in moderation, that’s perfectly healthy to me.

What toppings can you put on chocolate waffles?

My imagination could run wild here. Ice cream? Candied walnuts? NUTELLA? Those are just a few options if you’re feeling extra creative. You can also stick to the typical waffle toppings: fresh or frozen berries, butter and maple syrup, buttermilk syrup, whipped cream, or powdered sugar.

Expert Tips

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your waffle iron. Not all waffle irons are created equally—be sure you don’t open up the waffle iron too soon!
  • If you want a heftier kick of chocolate, add a half cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips to your batter!
  • For a lighter chocolate flavor, replace 1/4 cup cocoa powder with 1/4 cup flour.

Easy Chocolate Waffle Recipe

Rich and fluffy chocolate waffles that aren’t too sweet and make the perfect breakfast topped with buttermilk syrup, berries, and a little whipped cream.
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 5 minutes
Total: 30 minutes
Servings: 6 large waffles

Ingredients 

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup dutch-process cocoa
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups milk

Instructions 

  • Preheat you waffle iron as directed.
  • In a medium mixing bowl add the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Use a whisk to combine. Make a small well in the center of the dry ingredients.
  • Add the eggs, oil, and milk to the well, and use the whisk to slowly combine the wet and dry ingredients. Stir well, until very few lumps remain.
  • Pour the batter into your waffle iron according to manufacturers directions.
  • When the waffle is done cooking, carefully place it on a wire rack to cool, taking care not to stack the waffles on top of each other. Repeat with remaining batter.
  • Serve waffles hot with your favorite topping, such as buttermilk syrup, strawberries, and whipped cream.

Notes

  • These waffles are not a sweet dessert waffle, so the syrup and berries really make them great.
  • I would consider these a bit of a dark chocolate waffle. If you want less of a chocolate flavor, feel free to use 1/4 cup of cocoa powder and increase the all-purpose flour to 1 1/2 cups.
  • Some of my family’s favorite waffle toppings are fresh or frozen berries, butter and maple syrup, buttermilk syrup, whipped cream, or powdered sugar.
  • Make sure you don’t open the waffle iron too soon! Check the manufacturer’s instructions if this is the first time using a new waffle iron.

    We made these this morning and we really loved them despite the lack of suggested toppings. (We’ll do it right next time!) No sticking to the iron, not bitter, jut a delicious chocolate flavored waffle! The batter was a little thin so next time we’ll up the flour just a bit but otherwise, stick to the recipe. We’ll come back to these again and again! The chocolate smell in the kitchen is just a bonus. 🙂 Thanks!

    This recipe is perfect for people that like really bitter waffles. I would suggest adding a lot less cocoa powder and a bit more sugar. Although when eaten with syrup they taste pretty good

    delish, 10/10. Tips- I added about 1/4 cup more sugar than it said, and only 1 cup of milk, and hte sweetness and texture were perfect. I also added chocolate chips😋 (highly recommend)! The batter awas a little thin, so I was a bit worried about how they would cook, but it turned out great!

    Warning: will be a waste of ingredients and time. I had to add more flour to thicken them and that still didn’t work. I also had to add a lot of sugar and they still tasted like pure cocoa powder. Would NOT recommend

    It wasn’t until the fourth waffle that the waffle didn’t stick to the pan and separate into top and bottom pieces. In spite of the fact I followed the recipe exactly. Not particularly great tasting either. I definitely will NOT make this recipe again

      So sorry, issues with sticking generally have more to do with the waffle maker than the recipe though. Just make sure that it is preheated and well greased before using, that preheated part is normally the issue.
