Recipe FAQs

How thin should I slice the potatoes?

The thinner you slice your potatoes, the more chips you will have and the quicker they will cook. Try to aim for about ⅛ inch slices. You can also use a mandolin with a guard to cut the potatoes which can make it easier and safer.

Can I use sweet potatoes?

Absolutely! Although we use russet potatoes in this recipe, you could replace them with any other type of potato. Follow the same process for cutting and seasoning. Keep an eye on them in the air fryer because cooking time might change. We found that sweet potatoes needed a few more minutes to crisp up.

Should I soak the potatoes before cooking them?

Soaking your potatoes in cold water will help draw out some of the starch, allowing the chips to cook faster. We recommend soaking your potatoes for at least 30 minutes. If you have time then you can soak them for up to an hour.

How can I make sure to have crispy potato chips?

It is important to pat your potatoes dry to help them get as crispy as possible. This will ensure there is no excess moisture in the potatoes. You can also cut the potatoes into thinner slices, and lay them out in a single layer in the air fryer basket so they are hit with the circulating heat more.

How to Serve and Store Air Fryer Potato Chips

Air fryer potato chips are a great side to tuna or pulled pork sandwiches, cheeseburgers, or chicken wings. You can even eat these homemade chips with ranch or French onion dip as an appetizer or light snack.  If you have any leftover potato chips, you can store them in an airtight container or Ziploc bag on the counter or in the pantry for up to 5 days. Enjoy them whenever you are wanting a savory snack! After 5 days, the chips will start to get stale.

Expert Tips

  • Get creative with your seasonings! You can easily customize the flavor of your chips by adding paprika, pepper, chili powder, or other spices to taste like your favorite store-bought chip.
  • The cook time will partially depend on the thickness of the potato slices, so you might need to add an extra 5 minutes while cooking. Shaking the basket will help you gauge if you need to increase cooking time! Your chips should be golden brown and crispy.
  • While tossing the potato slices with oil and salt, make sure each slice is as evenly coated as possible so that they all have the same delicious flavor.
