Recipe FAQs

What else can I add to my Chex Mix?

One of our favorite ways to modify this recipe is by switching out what we add to the mix.  Some of our favorite additions include pistachios, cheez-its, goldfish crackers or any other favorite bite sized cracker. If you are going for a sweet Chex Mix then try adding marshmallows, chocolate chips, or M&M’s and toss your mix in some cinnamon sugar.

What other spices can I use to flavor my Chex Mix?

Great question! Using different spices is an easy way to modify this recipe. Grab your favorite spices and go to town! You can premake your favorite spice blend or let your family members come up with their own combinations. We like to divide the mix into smaller containers or bags before the spices are added so everyone can customize their own chex mix. Paprika or cumin will give you a savory flavor but you can turn on the heat with red pepper flakes and a chipotle chili powder.

Does it matter what kind of Chex I use in this recipe?

Not at all! One of our favorite things about this recipe is how easy it is to modify. We like to use corn and wheat chex since that is normally what we have at home, but feel free to switch them out for your favorite Chex flavors. Once you coat your ingredients in butter and spices you won’t notice the flavor of the chex as much.

How to Store Your Leftover Chex Mix

One of the best things about this recipe is how easy it is to store. Chex mix will store nicely on your counter in a plastic container with a tight lid or in a ziplock bag. When stored properly, your Chex Mix will be good for about a week before it starts to get stale. You can also store your leftovers in sandwich bags for an easy grab-and-go snack.

Expert Tips

  • To save some time on your clean up, use the container you plan to use for storage as you mix your ingredients together or use a large ziplock bag.
  • Depending on your preference, salted or unsalted butter can be used.
  • Evenly coating the ingredients in butter is key to ensuring your spices stick to each piece.
  • You can use any of your favorite spices and enjoy those flavors in this mix.
  • Divide the Chex mix into smaller bags before adding spices so everyone can enjoy their favorite flavors.
