Recipe FAQs

Do I need to score the top of the Brie before baking?

Many people will score the top of the cheese before baking it, but this is a completely optional step! It will not affect how your Brie cooks, and is usually done to allow flavors to infuse better into the cheese as well as to elevate the appearance. We don’t include scoring the top in this recipe, but if you want to you can easily do it with a sharp knife.

How do I know when the Brie is done baking?

The Brie is done cooking when it becomes soft and gooey in the middle! You can stick a knife or fork in the center and if it is easy to pierce or feels soft, then you know the cheese is ready. Be careful not to overcook the cheese otherwise it will become too runny. The perfect soft center will allow you to dip into or serve the Brie with ease.

What should I serve  with my baked Brie?

Baked Brie is typically served as an appetizer or finger food. Pair baked brie with crusty bread, garlic crackers, fresh and dried fruits, toasted nuts, and drizzles of honey or jam for a delightful mix. Adding charcuterie, olives, roasted garlic, and a fruit compote or chutney enhances its creamy richness with sweet, savory, and tangy flavors, offering a well-rounded experience. It would look great on my classic cheese board.

How to Store Your Brie

This baked cheese is best served fresh, so I don’t recommend throwing it in the oven until you are ready to serve it. However, if you happen to have any leftovers then you can cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and keep your brie in the fridge for up to a week. Reheat your brie by throwing the baking dish back in the oven for about 8 minutes at 350°F, or until the cheese is gooey.

Expert Tips

  • Baking the cheese in a mini Dutch oven or shallow dish as opposed to a baking sheet will prevent the cheese from oozing everywhere once you break into it
  • You can replace the maple syrup with honey. While it isn’t a necessary ingredient, the sweetness adds a nice balance to the cheese.
  • If you want to ensure even melting throughout your Brie, leave it on the counter and allow it to come to room temperature before baking! This will also prevent the outside from cooking faster than the middle.
