Easy Recipe For Fluffy Whole Wheat Waffles

This is my bare-bones waffle recipe that I make when I just want a delicious waffle. It’s simple, straightforward, and turns out every time. The waffles are light and fluffy while still being made out of 100% whole wheat flour. Your kids won’t even know that these waffles are full of whole grains and fiber to keep them full all morning. I’ve been making this recipe for years and years and I’m excited to update it and share it again with you today.

These waffles are crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. They’re just begging to be topped with your favorite waffle toppings. I’ll often make a double or triple batch of this recipe to store for later, too. Keep reading the post if that’s something you’d like to know more about.

Can I make whole wheat waffles the day before?

Pro tip: you can measure out the dry ingredients for this recipe and keep them in a glass canning jar.  In the morning when you want to make waffles in a hurry, just add the pre-measured contents of the jar to a bowl and add the wet ingredients as directed.  Taking out that extra step really helps cut down on the work, even if it’s just mentally. I’ll often make 3-4 jars of the dry ingredients at a time and just keep them in the pantry until I’m ready to make waffles.

Tips for making homemade whole wheat waffles:

  • You’ll have the best luck if you use a finely ground wheat flour. I have great luck using whole wheat pastry flour (which is very finely ground).
  • If 100% whole wheat isn’t your thing, feel free to use half whole wheat flour and half all-purpose white flour
  • I normally use 2% milk for this recipe but have also made it with almond milk with great success. If you’d like to try alternative milks, I think they’d work fine.
  • My mother-in-law gave me this animal waffle iron for my birthday a few years and and we LOVE IT! Not only are the waffles adorable (who doesn’t want to eat a little bunny, giraffe, or elephant waffle in the morning?!), it also works great and the smaller waffle size is great for kids (less food waste!). I highly recommend it because it’s awesome.

How do I store or freeze homemade waffles?

This is a great recipe to double, cook, and save for later. I’ll often make a double batch of these waffles early in the week, and store half for another meal later in the week. Cooking once and eating twice is a great time-saving practice. Let the waffles cool in a single layer on a wire rack. Then place on a plate and store in a baggie or cover with plastic wrap. You can also let the waffles cool and store in an air-tight container. Store in the fridge if you are going to eat them in less then 3-5 days and in the freezer to store for up to 2 months.

To reheat, let frozen waffles thaw overnight in the fridge. Place waffles in a toaster to re-crisp and warm before serving.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons butter or coconut oil, melted
  • 2 cups milk

Instructions

  1. Plug in your waffle iron to get it heating. (I love this inexpensive animal waffle maker!)
  2. In a medium bowl, add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar.  Use a whisk to combine them.
  3. Make a well in the center of your flour mixture and crack the eggs into it, add the melted butter and the milk.  Whisk to combine well.
  4. Ladle into the waffle iron and cook according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Eat piping hot or keep warm in a 200 degree oven until you are ready to serve.
  6. Delicious with blueberries and freshly whipped cream on top, butter and syrup, jam, or whatever else you enjoy on a waffle.
