How to: No Sew Scrap Fabric Basket with Handles

I am in LOVE with making scrap fabric baskets. They are just turning out so well! I thought I'd show you another one that I put together. The basket is a different type and shape but it still worked so well, and I added handles. My little girl attached herself to this basket and I had to bribe her just to get it away from her to take a picture.
This technique could make the cutest Easter basket to match an Easter dress. I'm toying with the idea of making my daughter a dress with a matching basket. I know she would love it.

    You will need:
    Scrap fabric
    Scissors
Basket - mine are from The Dollar Store

The full scrap fabric weaving instructions and picture tutorial can be found here: No Sew Scrap Fabric Basket. That is the link to the first basket I did.

This basket is different in the fact that I added handles! To make the handles, cut 3 strips of scrap fabric that are roughly 2 ½ feet long and 4 to 5 inches wide. Fold the fabric long ways so that it is about an 1 ½ wide (you are essentially making the fabric thicker so there is more to hold onto when it is a handle).

Tie and knot the fabric to the basket near the top. There was really no rhyme or reason to the method. I just tied it in a few knots so that it stayed. I left a tail past the knots that was 2 or 3 inches long. When I wove the basket sides, this tail was tucked under the fabric and didn't show.

Now braid the 3 scraps together to make your handle. When the handle is as long as you would like, tie it to the other side of the basket and trim the tail to a few inches.

    Easy!

I repeated these steps to make a second handle at the other end of the basket. The basket was too oblong and tipped with just one handle in the middle.

Now you can start weaving your scrap fabric around the edges. Again the full instructions for that step can be found here: No Sew Scrap Fabric Basket

The basket has become the official whale holder. May named the whale Shark when she was tiny and it stuck. So now she tells me the basket is Shark's home, and I can often find him in it, tucked in with a blanket. What a funny little girl I have.

I vaguely remember making some necklaces back in the day that look just like those basket handles 🙂 Love this whole idea and love your blog!

Good memory V! We did indeed make some fancy braided necklaces. I just did some for my girls camp kickoff too and the girls thought they were so cool! So trendy weren't we 🙂
