Healthy Snacks for Kids (and Mom and Dad too!)

Don’t let the care and feeding needs of your family make you exhausted. You know that phrase, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” Well the same concept applies to your kids and snacks. If you teach them how to prepare a few simple snacks on their own, you are setting them up for success and shorting the list of things that they ask you for (over and over again!).

I had so much fun making this list of healthy snack ideas and they don’t have to be just for kids, Mom and Dad will like them too. All of the snacks are three ingredients or less – which is a big win in my book.

In July I attended a retreat with other small business owners on Lake Michigan and that retreat was sponsored in part by Stonyfield Organic, as well as Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. on behalf of the Beef Checkoff , and Harry & David. This post is highlighting them as part of the retreat. I have not been paid to attend the retreat or to write this post. It was such a great learning experience that I wanted to share a little of it (and the brands who made it possible) with you today.

Five super simple AND healthy snack ideas:

  1. Peaches and Cream Yogurt Popsicles: the only things you need are a ripe peach, a little yogurt, and some honey (if you need it for sweetness)! My kids love making popsicles and they are a favorite in our house.
  2. Easy Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits: just open up a single serve container of yogurt and add some granola and berries (I used little containers of Stonyfield plain whole-milk Greek yogurt).
  3. 3 Ingredient Creamy Blueberry Smoothie: Greek yogurt, frozen banana, and frozen blueberries are combined for the easiest creamy smoothie around.
  4. Yogurt Ranch Dip: can be paired with your favorite seasonal veggies and all you need is some ranch mix (homemade is so easy!) and Greek yogurt!
  5. Healthy Apple Dip: can you believe that your peanut butter, honey, and Greek yogurt can make the best, fluffiest apple dip around? This is one of our all time favorite snacks, you’ll love it too.

What I love about these healthy snacks is that they just take a little mixing! One needs a blender (this is the recipe that’s best suited for older kids who have been taught how to use a blender), or a little time in the freezer, but they are still all so easy and delicious too.

What’s the best yogurt to use for healthy snacks?

I highly recommend using Stonyfield Organic plain or vanilla whole milk yogurt for these recipes (the 100% Grassfed is amazing too). Use the plain for any of them and if it’s a sweet recipe add a little honey or maple syrup to taste as needed. You can use the vanilla whole milk yogurt for the popsicle, smoothie, or parfait recipe for added flavor. Stonyfield is a great company with a really neat origin story. They support many small farms, have amazing products, and I think that buying organic has a big impact on our Earth and it’s something I love supporting.

How can you encourage kids in the kitchen?

I love helping kids have more autonomy in the kitchen. I think being able to prepare basic nourishing foods is a must have life skill. Starting with small things like making parfaits, apple dip, and other healthy snacks are the perfect place to start.

As a parent you can let go of a few things so that your kids feel like it’s safe to experiment and learn in the kitchen.

  • Let go of your need to follow a recipe exactly (especially when it comes to little no-bake snacks like these). Give the kids freedom to play around with ingredients and amounts to see what they like.
  • Let go of your need to have a clean kitchen. Life and cooking are a bit messy, especially when you are new to it. Let your kids get a little messy without fear of you breathing down they necks. That being said, it’s also great to teach and help them learn how to properly clean up when done.
  • Let go of your need to do everything for them. I get it, I have FIVE KIDS, its often easier to just do it yourself. If you are going to let your kids learn new things, you’re going to have to let them try do things on their own!

5 Healthy Snacks with 3 Ingredients or Less That Your Kids Can Make by THEMSELVES!

Looking for some really easy AND healthy snack ideas? These snack ideas are made with 3 or less ingredients and your kids (depending on age) can even make all of these great snacks on their own.
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 5 minutes
Total: 10 minutes
Servings: 2

Ingredients

Peaches and Cream Yogurt Popsicles:

  • 1 small ripe peach
  • 1/2 cup Stonyfield Organic plain or vanilla Greek yogurt
  • honey or maple syrup to taste

Easy Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits:

  • 100 % Grassfed plain yogurt, (the cute 5.3 ounce containers are perfect for this)
  • granola
  • berries, (fresh or frozen)
  • honey or maple syrup to taste, if needed

3 Ingredient Creamy Blueberry Smoothie:

  • 1/2 cup frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup plain or vanilla Greek yogurt
  • a little water to help it blend up, if needed

Yogurt Ranch Dip:

Healthy Apple Dip:

  • 1/4 cup plain or vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoon honey, or to taste
  • apples for dipping

Instructions

Peaches and Cream Yogurt Popsicles:

  • Use a butter knife to cut the peach in half and remove the pit. Cut the peach into 1/2 inch pieces.
  • Add the peach to a small bowl.
  • Add the yogurt and stir to combine.
  • Add honey or maple syrup to taste. You’ll want it to be a bit sweet.
  • Stir well to combine.
  • Add the mixture to a popsicle mold and then add a stick to the center.
  • Freeze until frozen through, 12 hours or overnight.
  • Run the outside of the popsicle mold under warm water to help release the popsicle.

Easy Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits:

  • Open the small container of yogurt or if you are dishing from a larger container, place about 1/2 cup of yogurt in a small bowl.
  • Top with granola and fresh or frozen berries.
  • You can drizzle the top with a little honey or maple syrup if you’d like it sweeter.
  • Eat right away so that the granola doesn’t get soggy.

3 Ingredient Creamy Blueberry Smoothie:

  • Get a parent’s help for this recipe since you are using a blender.
  • Add the banana, blueberries, and yogurt to the bowl of your blender.
  • Blend on high speed until well combined and smooth.
  • If the mixture is too thick to blend, stop and add 1/4 cup or so of water to help loosen up the mixture. Return the lid and blend again until smooth.
  • Serve right away while still cold.

Yogurt Ranch Dip:

  • In a small bowl combine the yogurt and ranch mix. Stir to combine.
  • Taste the dip and adjust the seasoning to taste with additional ranch mix as needed.
  • Serve with your favorite vegetables.

Healthy Apple Dip:

  • Add the yogurt, peanut butter, and honey to a small bowl.
  • Use a fork to combine the ingredients well.
  • Dip sliced apple into the mixture.

This post is highlighting Stonyfield Organic Yogurt but I have not been paid for my time or to attend the retreat. Stonyfield was a gracious sponsor and this is my thank you and retreat recap. I hope you enjoy getting to know them as a brand and some of the other business owners that I linked to.

How fun are these healthy snack recipes that are so easy your kids can make them themselves? I know they aren’t mind blowing or anything, but I also know how nice it is to have an easy list of snack ideas around for when the kids are hungry – yet again. I hope this helps and I hope that you enjoy making and eating them as much as we do.
