I tasted my first pummelo while on spring break with my favorite cousin. She took me to Florida with her and her family for years and some of my best high school memories come from those trips. We would leave cold Indiana and watch as the temperature reading inside of the car climbed the farther south we went. We knew we were in Florida when we could smell the orange blossoms. Oh that smell! Heaven. On. Earth. We would pull over to a roadside stand to stock up on fresh fruit for the week before going to the condo. At such a stand I met the pummelo, best free sample ever. I’ve loved them ever since.
I had a tasty pummelo the other day. After I cut it and took out the edible part (I treat them like grapefruit) I just couldn’t throw the shell away. I ended up making a little fruit salad and serving the salad out of the pummelo half. It was darling!
Citrus Fruit Salad
Skin and chop half a pummelo, a navel orange, a clementine, and a tangerine. Scrape out the inside of the plummelo with a spoon and then put your citrus salad in the shell to serve. Things taste better when they are pretty don’t they!?
