8 Simple Smoothie Recipes to Liven Up Your Day

I’ve been on a healthy smoothie recipe kick lately and I wanted to bring some of my fall favorites into it. This Healthy Pumpkin Protein Smoothie is a little taste of fall that you can have for breakfast! It tastes a lot like a simple pumpkin pie filling or pudding, but it’s thin enough to drink like a normal smoothie. I love this smoothie because it packs in about 20 grams of protein without any protein powder (and if you did add some, you could easily double that amount). The calories and fat will depend a lot on the type Continue Reading →

Happy spring! I love this time of year and I’m so excited to be sharing a beautiful Healthy Strawberry Kiwi Smoothie recipe with you today. Things in my neck of the woods are warming right up. The lovely thing about living in a high desert is that it’s still nice and cool at night though it can get into the seventies during the day already. I planted a raised 8 foot by 6 foot box of strawberry pants last year and planted four little rhubarb plants down the center of the box. I kept calling it my “pie box” all Continue Reading →

Slow Cooker Apple Cider is a fun recipe that is just perfect for your next get-together. I love this recipe because you start with real, whole, beautiful apples and turn them into apple cider. It’s not mixing juices together, this is the real deal. Ok, it’s the slow cooker version of the real deal. The last few years we have taken literally a truck load of apples that grow on our properties (The Shanty has 4 huge old apple trees and the new farm property where my garden is has 15 or so middle-aged apple trees) to a friend’s house Continue Reading →

Can you believe it’s been three whole weeks since baby Graham was born? It feels like it’s been ages and the blink of an eye all at the same time. The passing of time is funny like that, isn’t it? He’s a sweet baby who is off of the lights for jaundice, has his days and nights all mixed up, and doesn’t love being awake. He wants to be nursing or asleep all day, every day. Life with five little kids to love is busy! Thank goodness my mom flew in to help out and my sister is still here. We’ll Continue Reading →

Postpartum Recovery Smoothie

Today is the #eatseasonal post for April and I’m so excited to share this Healthy Key Lime Pie Smoothie with you today. This single-serve smoothie only take 4 ingredients and 5 minutes to put together. My family doesn’t really like citrus things even though I love them. I’ve been craving a nice tart dessert for weeks and this smoothie was just the treat I needed. Greek yogurt and half an avocado make it smooth and extra creamy, and the juice and zest from two limes give it just the pucker I was looking for. Limes and avocado are both in Continue Reading →

This Cold Killer Smoothie from Emily at One Lovely Life is just what you need up your sleeve. Enjoy! ‘Tis the season for every cough, sniffly nose, and bug out there. We were hit with a round of colds over December, and I felt like it took us a month to recover! It’s so hard when no one can taste or smell anything and doesn’t have an appetite. Since you can only eat Continue Reading →

Happy February friends! I thought we’d start off Love Month with something sweet and a little indulgent (but still totally healthy). Healthy Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Smoothie (no weird powder needed) is just the recipe for today. I tend to get in smoothie ruts. I make a lot of green smoothies for me and a lot of traditional fruit smoothies for the kids, but I don’t branch out much past that. I’ve seen plenty of recipes for chocolate and/or peanut butter smoothies and so I thought it high time to give some a try. After a week or so of “testing,” Continue Reading →

I know green smoothies are all the rage right now, but let’s be honest, a pink smoothie looks so much more appetizing! I have a wonderfully healthy smoothie recipe for you today. It’s naturally sweetened, packs the power of both pomegranate and sour cherries, and is dairy-free. Sour Cherry and Pomegranate Detox Smoothie is pretty much amazing.   This power pomegranate detox smoothie is a great way to start off your healthy eating. I find myself craving sugar—lots of it— after my holiday bingeing, and the effects of sugar withdrawal can be harsh. So in order to help myself along, Continue Reading →

“What on earth is wassail?” you may be asking. Let me give you a little history lesson! Old English “wæs hæl” literally means “be you healthy.” Wassail (or wassil) is traditionally a hot spiced cider that is sweetened and has other fruit juices added, and it was probably fermented and enjoyed as a hard cider back in the day.   Today, Wassail is generally a nonalcoholic hot beverage. Wassailing (you know, like the song “here we come a-wassailing”) refers to a medieval ritual to celebrate the apple trees and to ward off evil spirits for next year’s cider making. We Continue Reading →

The tiny town of Hope, Indiana has an annual fall gathering called Heritage Days. Like most small town yearly events it includes a parade, shopping for junk at little booths, and food. The food is always the best part ! I have such vivid memories of the food from Heritage Days. There was homemade ice cream, funnel cakes, homemade cherry hand pie (fresh fried by the Little Hoosiers for a fundraiser, and if you even know what I’m talking about we are meant to be best friends). And then there were the lemon shake-ups. I can’t remember who did the Continue Reading →

It’s that time again! 12 bloggers, 12 recipes, 12 ingredients or less. This month’s theme is just perfect for spring- fresh and fruity. I made a healthy tropical smoothie for you all to enjoy today. It’s naturally sweetened, dairy free, and delicious! This is one of my kids’ favorite smoothie combos. Any extras left in the bottom of the blender? Just throw them into popsicle molds and freeze for later. I call for lots of frozen fruit in the recipe. You don’t have to use it but I strongly recommend it. Getting into the habit of keeping lots of frozen Continue Reading →

Clean and Healthy Tropical Smoothie

I’ve been making smoothies for a long, long time. The summer after my senior year in high school I started going to garage sales with a good friend. Being a novice, she shared all of her bargain hunting tips and tricks with me (life skill right there!). During our early Saturday morning adventures I picked up a used blender for $3. Shortly thereafter I moved to Ball State University in Muncie Indiana to live in the dorms with my best friend – taking the blender with me. This was my first time being away from home and it wasn’t without it’s Continue Reading →

Good, Better, and Best Smoothies

Four ingredients never tasted so good! You are going to love this clean and healthy Orange Julius Copycat recipe; it’s dairy-free and guilt-free too. This recipe is one of my all time favorite “desserts” to make for the kids after school or for movie night. It’s sweet and creamy and full of real ingredients. One of my favorite recipes to make in my Blendtec blender is banana ice cream. You simply blend frozen bananas until they are the consistency of soft serve ice cream and enjoy. We make this all of the time because it’s healthy and delicious. I was dreaming of an Continue Reading →

Christmas is in the air and I know I’m not the only one thinking about what to give all the people that I love. We just moved to the tiny town that my husband grew up in. Tiny town life means two things 1) we know and are friends with nearly everyone or 2) we are related to everyone else. My list for friends and neighbor gifts is huge this year so I’ve been pondering on the perfect thing to give that won’t break the bank. That’s where this adorable hot cocoa gift set comes in. All of the jars, Continue Reading →

Sometimes the summer afternoons crawl by. The only cure for the blahs is a smoothie. This healthy tropical smoothie is quick and easy and we gobbled it up. It also has no sugar added and happens to be dairy free. You can’t go wrong when you are blending together fruit and ice. And here’s a tip – I love to throw any extra smoothie into my popsicles molds so that we can enjoy it the next day, frozen! Summer is almost over, and the end of this summer has been something I’ve been dreading for years. My oldest is going Continue Reading →

Thanks for all of your love and support. We are still at my in-laws but I have had this little beauty in the archives waiting for you. Happy Saturday to you…As I mentioned before we had a bumper crop of cherries this year. I dried some, made preserves and jelly with others, but still had gallons and gallons left. An easy way to use all the cherries was to juice them. There is very little work involved with steam juicing; you don’t even have to remove the pit! The juicer is totally worth the monetary investment if you own a Continue Reading →

Strawberry Limeade Slushie

Strawberries are in season, have you noticed? I bought nine quarts this weekend and we just have a few left. I’m a traditionalist when it comes to strawberries. We eat them plain, on shortcake, on waffles, or in this lemonade. I always want to do something fun and unique with them but they just don’t last that long. I’m planning on getting more and making strawberry freezer jam. It’s so easy and so delicious. When I was a kid we grew strawberries in our garden. Mom, how many plants did you have? In my mind we had around 300 plants. Strawberries Continue Reading →

Smoothies are a fun way to dress up our usual breakfast of oatmeal. They are special and a little extra splash of fun, both things I love. This is a great winter smoothie when most fruit is out of season. I used canned pineapple juice and frozen orange juice concentrate. Easy peasy! This is a perfect smoothie to add a handful of fresh spinach to. You would never know it was in there…all of that sweet fruit hides spinach well; it just turns it green! Mmmm green smoothies are the best. My kids gobble them up and don’t even question Continue Reading →
