About Bless This Mess & Myself

Hello!  Welcome to Bless This Mess! Why such a mess you may ask? Five young kids, a love for all things tasty, a huge garden, lambs, backyard chickens, and many other life adventures give me a whole lot of mess to bless.

Bless this Mess is a happy picture of a quiet small town life. We moved to the Middleofnowhere in 2012 and have never looked back. We live an hour and a half from a Costco or Target but it’s the perfect place to raise kids and animals.

Bless this Mess is home to lots and lots of family friendly recipes. I love to cook with “real” food. Seasonal ingredients that I can grow at home or find on sale in my little grocery store are the best. It’s healthy real food, no health food store needed. I have a no-nonsense approach to eating the way our great-grandma’s did. Bring on the butter! We eat lots of healthy foods which means we have plenty of room for dessert. I feel like we have a real life balance to eating well and I hope you feel the same. Hungry? My recipe index is a great place to start.

After remodeling a house for 2 years (and washing dishes in a bucket for over NINE months!), we now own “The Shanty“, a dilapidated old house built in the 1890’s. We are starting our hobby farm dream on the property while we build and open a hardware store here in our town (Husband works at home part-time as a Civil Engineer, but the hardware store is his dream too). I grew a massive vegetable garden, enjoyed having my backyard chickens there, and we also tried our hand at raising lambs for meat (and what a journey that was!) at The Shanty. This hobby farm dream is super fun for me to share with you all.

Hobby farm

We expanded our farming dreams by buying a farm in the summer of 2014! Well, it’s not much of a farm yet. It’s more like a pole barn, a neglected orchard, and alfalfa fields, but we have a grand vision. We started building our dream house there on January 23, 2016. We think it will take us 2 years to build the house ourselves and consider this the ultimate DIY!

We live in the prettiest place in the world. Right outside of Zion National Park in southern Utah.

Family pictures are a must share!

This blog is a place for me to share all of my messes with you. If you are into cooking, crafting, chickens, thrifting, furniture painting, gardening or remodeling, I think you’ll find something you like.

Here’s to some good cookin’, hobby farming,  crafting, and life livin’.  Enjoy.

And if you’d really like to know… here’s some of the nitty gritty.

This is me:

Melissa profile picture, professional headshot for food blogger

I’m tall.  Really tall.  Like 6 foot tall kind of tall.  I have mousy hair and squinty eyes, forget to wear make-up more days than not, and my toes have been painted with the same color of Barbie pink for the last 7 years.  I adore my freckles and milk glass cake stands.

I love my kids something fierce.  I have a strong momma-bear instinct and sending my oldest to Kindergarten last year made me bawl.

I cook.  I love all things made from scratch, I buy butter by the 30 pound case, and I grind my own wheat.  I garden, I can (you know, glass jars and boiling water), and I am not afraid of whole raw milk.  Chocolate chip cookies and crusty bread are my weaknesses.

I sew.  I like it, I do it, I’m learning.  My mother is a master seamstress.  She’s amazing and did all my sewing for me growing up.  Multiple states now separate me from her, so it’s time I learn for myself.  I like to make things up; patterns scare me.  I’m finding I have quiet a knack for it.  I hope you think the same.

I have an Etsy shop. Handmade makes me swoon.

I’d love for you to stay in touch. I started and continue to blog because I enjoy it, but I really want to be successful, grow, and make a buck too! I can’t do that without you, so stick around.

  1. Wow! Its awesome to find others that share the same interests as I do! I am recently a sahm to my two children (4 & 3 months) and am running our hobby farm, among many other things. We raise our meat (pigs and chickens), as well as raise a small herd of mini milking goats. I also can and garden, cloth diaper and make all of my own baby food. I will definitely stay tuned and look forward to your next blog!

  2. I found your healthy eating (2 week challenge) on Pinterest. It was so nice to finally see someone else believes in the 80/20 rule, whole milks and cheese, and everything else in between. I am so happy to have found your blog I have so many of the same interests. I can’t wait to read more:)! Are you on Instagram?

  3. Hi! I discovered you through pinterest and made your pizza crust tonight. It was so good but I used honey instead of sugar. Still good. It made two large pizzas and a couple calzones. Looking forward to reading more here. Your family is adorable.

  4. how do you have time to do all that? I have a 2 year old and just had another baby a month ago. 1. Thank you so much for connecting Brenda! That really made my day. And I do know the Lord, it’s just a quieter/more personal part of my life. I do hope it comes through though! ALASKA! Let’s be friends and I’ll come visit :) Have a great day friend.

      1. I guess were sisters in Christ, a more quieter/personal time for me too! And yes from what I see it does come through. Yes Alaska and we love it. Gods most beautiful state. The season of garden time is too short tho. I’ll be your friend:) And you have a great day today. God bless you and your family.. Thanks for the zucchini post to I just got some the other day and am planning to make some bread!

  10. I came upon your blog while looking for easy healthy recipes on Pinterest. I am so excited to have found it. We share a lot of the same interest and although we (me, my husband, and our three boys) currently live in the suburbs I hope to one day live on a good size piece of land in an old country home with all sorts of animals. I love to garden but haven’t had much luck in the past. Maybe some of your post will help. I’m looking forward to reading your blog, especially the recipes. I love good food. Thank you.

    1. Casey!
I just love connecting with like minded people. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, it really made my day! I think we should be internet friends :)

  11. You have such a cute and handsome ( husband, lol ) family. You remind me of my friend I grew up with and went through grade school and high school with. You are a younger version of her. I enjoy your blog and recipes, even though I am a 60 something woman!

    1. Thank you Marijean (love your name!) I think they are cute and handsome too. Here’s a fact for you, most of my friends in town are your age or older. I’ve always felt more comfortable with older ladies… what can I say, we were meant to be friends! Have a great day lady!

  12. Wow! Just stumbled across your blog whilst looking for ideas on painting furniture. It’s like someone took EVERYTHING I am about and put it in one place!!! :-) Thank you so much……and the fact you are a six footer like me makes it just seem better! I am in England so will have to ‘translate’ some of your fab tips as I continue to renovate (‘remodel’!) my home and develop my small holding (‘hobby farm’) all with the help of me little man (7 year old son). I am so looking forward to reading more and learning more. Thank you so much, you are an inspiration :-)

    1. Penny! It sounds like we are meant to be BFF’s! I’m always so pleased to meet another member of the 6 footer club. Add some remodeling and a hobby farm and we are gold. Keep in touch!

  13. I can’t wait to read all your blogs. As a mother, chef and crafter I inderstand messes. Thank you for sharing your story it’s amazing to see who have such similar interest as myself.

  14. What a great find to come across your blog today! I’m looking forward to looking through your site and trying your recipes. It’s encouraging to find others who’s goal is to be more self sufficient and live a simple lifestyle living off the land & cooking from scratch as you & your husband are going. What great role models for your kids!

  15. What started out as a hobby with chickens has turned out something else…I started with 6 and now have 150 with another 75 in incubator…just 2 years in…my wife keeps asking me if I was ok…lol..I told her I was just trying to build my hens up…sounded good to me…but not sure if she bought into it…lol…anyhow…I stumbled across your blog when I went to looking for ways to water these chickens…I was about to go out and spend another 100. or so on more waterers and feeders…I am so glad I found my way here…thank you so much…and looking forward to reading more on your blog….

  16. I’m laying in bed in pain (I have psoriatic arthritis) after a long two days of running a pastors conference for 100 pastors at my church. Anyway, I should be at church but am instead looking at crafts and recipes. I somehow (long trail thru the internet) came across your site and I love it! I am a city girl living in what I consider the middle of nowhere in Montana. Yet I do have a costco and target near by it’s no city (I grew up in Seattle) haha
Anyway I try daily to give my girls and hubby a better, cleaner life then the big city offers. I love what you are doing and you have inspired me to get out of bed (pain and all) and get cracking. I think I will start with yogurt in a crockpot…simply the greatest idea ever. So let me say thank you and that I will be praying for your continued journey as you raise your family!

    1. Stay in bed for the day friend, it sounds like you totally deserve it! Large scale event planning would make anyone tired… you deserve a little rest. Thank you so much for your comment though. I read it this morning and have been thinking about it all day long. Kind thoughts really do make a difference and you took the time to share one with me. Thank you for that. Hope you stick around :)

  17. I’ve been following your blog for awhile now after looking for Clean Eating Meals on Pinterest. I love the 80/20 rule. I try to check in on a weekly basis…and I so look forward to it! I just wanted to share with you that you truly inspire me. You just appear to try to live a ‘wholesome’ life. I’m not sure if that makes sense to anyone but me. Lol. Anyway, just wanted to say, thanks for the blog & keep up the good work!
    P.S. Your’s is the only blog I follow…truly. ;-)

  18. I am new to following any sort of blog, lol. I have many girlfriends that talk about blogs that they follow and until now I really have had no interest or time. I came across your blog through a recipe that I pinned on Pinterest. I have to say your meal planning is literally “saving” us. We have 7 children, Praise God, I always wanted a big family. Needless to say I had no idea how to meal plan or budget and this has truly helped us! If I were to imagine the ideal place to live it would be right were you seem to be. To enjoy land, animals, gardening, and the peace and beauty of Gods creation. It is wonderful that you are pursuing dreams that both your husband and yourself have. Thank you for sharing. Blessings!

    1. We’ll let’s be neighbors then!! And seven kids has always been out goal :) I hope to at least have 6, the carrying them is harder on me than I thought it would be. Have you bought my ebook? It’s another meal plan?! If not I’ll mail you one! Thanks so much for your kinds words. Melissa

  19. I think I have visited your blog before, but this was the first time I really went through a lot of it. I have adapted your Fall/Winter meal plan and written down my shopping/ingredient list. Sunday will be the official “start” of my attempt at moving my husband, children, and I to a healthier state of being; food being the starting point. I love how you have so many recipes and ideas that are so kid friendly and look like things my children will eat. My 4 year old son is very picky, but I think the recipes I found here will be good choices he will enjoy. I just want to thank you for putting in the time to share all these great recipes with everyone! I cannot wait to get my grocery shopping done and start cooking!

    1. Yay!! I just thought I would send you this link. I’m doing a healthy challenge too and I just wrote out this coming week’s meal plan. It might really help you! http://www.blessthismessplease.com/2015/01/feel-great-8-health-challenge-starting-monday-plus-meal-plan-week.html

and the shopping list for the other meal plan is here:

You can do it!!! Just start with baby steps. How can I help?!

  20. Melissa,

Because of you, I have turned over a new leaf. I was stuck in a rut of wanting to become healthier, but struggling to see it through. You have helped me so much and now I am totally on your 80/20 mindset. I have completely changed my eating habits and am looking forward to planting a garden this spring. I can’t wait until we move from city limits to the country (I’m such a farmer girl at heart) so I can raise my own produce and animals for meat and eggs. Also, I now am SO READY to have some chickens of my own! I wish you happiness and prosperity for your new year!

P.S. I joined the Feel Great in 8 Challenge the same time as you. I’m not doing a fantastic job, but I’m so much more happy, even after only the first week!

    1. Such a kind note! Thank you! I’m not doing fabulous either… how can we help each other?! I had to take off like 20 points yesterday for no-no food and guess what I want to do today?! Eat all the bad things! LOL. We can do it together!!!

  21. Hi Melissa,
I’m Shalisse’s sister and she’s told me about your site here. Love it! Congrats on your blogging success and best wishes surviving your four littles. I’m attempting to do the same thing. Go team!

    1. Shalisse is the best. She just watched my two littlest while I took the other two to the dentist and that baby cried most of the time :( I owe her big. So if you are sister then I automatically like you too :) Where are you blogging?! Send me a link!!!

  22. I’m reading your blog for the first time today. I downloaded your 14 days of meals from Pinterest. I’m so excited to start this. I really like what I’m seeing here. You have an adorable spirit. Thank you!

  23. I think you’re pretty alright. The name of your blog drew me in, from a hashtag! I’m at a crossroad, and I need a whole lot of blessing too! You’re family is beautiful! I will continue to follow you!

  24. Hi Melissa,
I just read your blog post 10 Healthy Slow Cooker Freezer Meals and I had a question. It looks like you put everything but the liquid in for freezing. I wondered what you thought about how it might work if I put fresh meat in the day of the cooking along with the frozen veggies and seasonings? Do you think it would make any difference? Thanks!
