Cutting the bananas into little heart shapes is the perfect task for kids and dipping them in chocolate is a simple way to dress them up. You can even add sprinkles, nuts, or shredded coconut to the chocolate before it sets to really make them special.

These make great afternoon snacks and are the perfect addition to a Valentine’s chocolate and cheese board. You could also give them as a gift paired with one of these easy Valentine’s treats.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Super easy to make with only two ingredients required. Plus no baking!
  • A great recipe to get kids involved in the kitchen (they can use a butter knife to cut the heart shapes and sprinkle the dipped bananas with any toppings they want).
  • They are a healthier alternative to traditional sweets, combining the natural sweetness of bananas with the rich taste of chocolate.
  • Chocolate-covered bananas freeze well for a yummy summer treat.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Bananas: Make sure they are ripe, which means yellow without brown spots.
  • Melting chocolate: Ghirardelli melting wafers are what I used here but you can use any brand you can find.
  • Toppings: While these are totally optional, it’s fun to add sprinkles, chopped nuts, or shredded coconut before the chocolate sets.

Recipe FAQs

What kind of chocolate should I use in this recipe?

You can use milk, dark, or white chocolate for this recipe. I used Ghirardelli melting wafers because they are so easy to use and aren’t fussy (but taste amazing).

Can I use dairy-free or vegan chocolate?

Yes. I have had the best results using the semi-sweet mini chocolate chips from Enjoy Life to dip treats.

How do I store the chocolate-covered banana hearts?

Store them in the refrigerator after the chocolate sets.

Can I freeze these chocolate-covered banana hearts?

Yes! These are just as good frozen. They thaw quickly, so if they are too hard, it only takes a few minutes for them to warm up. You can also store them in the freezer up for 2 to 3 months.

Expert Tips

  • Use bananas that are ripe (yellow) but not overripe (brown spots).
  • You can use any chocolate in this recipe. I recommend Ghirardelli melting wafers because they taste good and are easy to use.
  • Get your kids involved. Bananas are so easy to cut with a butter knife and it’s fun for them to sprinkle the toppings after you dip them in chocolate.
  • If your chocolate starts to thicken up while you’re dipping, just melt it a little more. Sometime the moisture form the banana makes the chocolate get thick quickly.
  • Save all the banana scraps from cutting the heart shapes and freeze them to use in a smoothie another day.

Chocolate-covered banana hearts made with only two ingredients are great treats for kids to help make and eat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe bananas
  • 8 ounces of chocolate
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the bananas into circles.
  2. Cut the banana slices into hearts by cutting the bottom to make it pointy and then cutting a ‘v’ into the top.
  3. Melt the chocolate over a double boiler or in the microwave.
  4. Dip the banana hearts in the chocolate, one at a time. Fish them out with a fork and tap the fork on the edge of the bowl to remove any extra chocolate.
  5. Place dipped hearts on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper or parchment paper.
  6. Repeat until all your hearts are covered, reheating the chocolate as needed.
  7. Decorate with sprinkles if you like.
  8. Refrigerate until you are ready to serve. These are also great frozen.

  1. I made these(well I didn’t make the cute heart shapes) a few years ago…..I put them into the freezer and had my own little midnight indulgent snack now and then. Somehow I forgot about them(how?) and they proceeded to get buried like most things do in a freezer. About a month ago I found the bag of a dozen or so….after the house had gone to sleep for the night I happily put them in my belly. They were still awesome!

  2. yum! how is teaching preschool w/2 other little ones? i’m trying to decide what I want to do w/michael next year.

    1. I love doing the group preschool thing! It’s cheap (free!), it’s fun, and it was a great way for me to meet other women since they started the Monday after we moved into our house!

I just plan on Henry helping out and doing everything the kids are doing. If we are doing a craft or worksheet I just make sure to have everything for him too. He loves it even if he is just coloring on the paper while the kids are working on writing.

Kimball takes a nap for most of it, and when he isn’t napping he just plays on the floor. The kids love him!

It has worked out really well for me and even with having my other kids around.

    1. Bahaha! Yes. She said that and “cooking”. So I have branched out – and honestly when you live in 400 square feet, cleaning is quick (so is the mess making though!)

  3. Melissa, you are just so talented! Your description on the side doesn’t do your blog and yourself justice, but your pic of yourself is beautiful!

    1. You are nice to me. You should write me a new description! It’s so hard to do it for myself – it’s just weird!
